Rihanna celebrated her 24th birthday on Monday by shocking the world with a collaboration with her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown on the remix for her single “Birthday Cake.”

Born in Trinidad, Minaj came to the States when she was five, grew up in Queens, and attended the prestigious LaGuardia high school for the performing arts (it was the model for the school in Fame). Her fashion education also began there. “I was dressing in Tommy Hilfiger baggy shirts and Boss jeans, but then I met a person who dressed like a tiny lady—pantsuits, heels, lots of makeup. I thought she was larger than life. She once did my makeup—I had never seen myself made up before. I didn’t want to wash it off; I felt like I had one day to live this fantasy of being a glamour girl.” 

 

She currently lives in a condo in L.A., where she moved for the weather but also to escape “some bad memories.” Though she declines to divulge much about her personal life, she readily admits to snuggling up in hotel beds, unwinding after a performance by watching Forensic Files and Judge Judy. Minaj insists she’s terrible at small talk and never goes out much, except for the occasional foray to a favorite restaurant. “I went to Negril the other night, and I brought, like, ten of the fans who were waiting outside with me, and bought them all food!”

Now Minaj is expected to be a glamour girl every day. Her ensembles—“They’re costumes, not outfits”—are often custom-made or imported from Japan, where little-known designers like Shojono Tomo supply items like the nutty plastic apron Minaj wore during New York Fashion Week last September. (If she has yet to market her distinctive naughty–baby doll look, Minaj has already entered the world of cosmetics, launching a nail-polish collaboration with OPI and becoming a 2012 M.A.C. Viva Glam spokesperson.) In her downtime, she is far from label-obsessed. “If I can combine designer things with other things, I’m a happy camper.” Not so with accessories. At one time she was spending $50,000 a month on “Giuseppe, Versace, YSL, and Fendi shoes. And I bought tons of Vuitton bags. When you’re a young girl from Queens, you’re going to stock up on those bags.”

They say "time heals all wounds." It looks like all is well with America's favorite young couple, Chris Brown and Rihanna. The two came together for a remix version for each of their new releases. "Birthday Cake" can be found on Rihanna's latest album Talk That Talk, while "Turn Up The Music" can be found on Breezy's upcoming album, Fortune.

Both of these remix records will definitely have people talking, but the question is, "Is America ready to move on from the past?" Domestic violence is a very serious crime, and the photos that resulted from the incident didn't help ease the situation at all. Chris Brown has definitely endured his fair share of ridicule for his transgression, and is finally being recognized for his talents again. While good music has allowed people to overlook the shortcomings of many artists, it's never been faced with something of this magnitude. There will also be questions as to what message is being sent to the youth by the two uniting once again. But, this situation is over three years old now and each of these individuals have grown and experienced a lot since then.

Gyptian is creating some buzz among dancehall fans this week after a few intimate photos of the reggae star and his girlfriend hit the net.

Sources close to Gyppo told Urban Islandz that he and his longtime girlfriend, Javana, are expecting.

Late last year Urban Islandz broke new that the Gaza prefect has abandoned Di Teacha during his legal troubles. In a recent interview with Jamaican journalists, Popcaan revealed that he has still not visit the deejay behind bars.

“I don’t go and see him as yet, but him know mi have a busy schedule,” Popcaan said.

Popcaan also confirmed that he is still a member of the Gaza despite recent rumors claiming he is not. “I am still in the Gaza 100%,” he added.

Popcaan also dismiss claims by Shocking Vibes CEO, Patrick Roberts claiming that they were his official Booking Agent.

According to Popcaan, Creative Source is 100% in charge of all bookings.

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko defeated challenger Dereck Chisora by unanimous decision in Munich, Germany Saturday (February 18), but it was the events that took place at the post fight press conference that has the boxing world buzzing.

Chisora got into a brawl with David Haye, who retired from boxing after losing to Wladimir Klitschko last year.

2012 could be the year of a Rihanna and Chris Brown reunion. At this point it is almost inevitable.

Last weekend the two were spotted leaving a recording studio before reports surfaced that they are recording a duet together. On Tuesday party goers at Rihanna’s 24th birthday bash confirmed that Breezy was at the party getting close to RiRi.

Attendees at the party reportedly signed a confidentiality agreement and no pics were allowed. However, one party goer dished some of the secret happenings on Twitter.

“All I can say, CB was invited and she was acting like the happiest girl on her birthday and probably got what she asked for.”

The very next day, Rihanna tweeted:

Chris Brown may be having a hell of a come back but there are still a few folks that won’t let him live down his past mistakes. And he is sick of it! Yesterday, he took to his twitter account and tweeted (and of course later deleted) his frustrations:

The outbursts confused a few folks (especially since he’s been on his best twitter behavior lately) however, he had been taking some hard hits from some unforgiving celebs lately, especially the night of the Grammys. While he was getting his shine on at the Grammy Awards ceremony (taking home a Grammy for Best R&B Album, and performing twice) he had some unforgiving people fuming in their seats, including Country singer Miranda Lambert. She tweeted from her seat:

“How dang long did they give Nicki Minaj to do whatever that was? Strange. And Chris Brown twice? I don’t get it. He beat on a girl…Not cool that we act like that didn’t happen. He needs to listen to Gunpowder and lead and be put back in his place

“Gunpowder & Lead” is one of Miranda’s songs about a woman who is ready to shoot and kill her abusive husband as soon as he’s released from jail. The irony..

Meanwhile, Grammy producer Ken Ehrlich defended the Grammys decision to allow Chris to perform in an interview with Gayle King. He said that Chris was more than deserving of a second chance.

“I just believe people deserve a second chance. The year he had this year, really brought him back into the public. He really deserved a second chance.”

Reggae/dancehall star Gyptian has stepped forward to address claims of a beef between himself and dancehall giant Bounty Killer over a female.

Last week rumors surfaced online claiming that Gyptian and the Alliance head was involved in an altercation at a popular nightclub. Sources claimed that the fight was over a ex girlfriend of Bounty Killer that Gyptian is now dating. However, Gyptian denied those claims calling them “false.”

“Dat is rubbish, mi neva see dem man deh a Fiction, a waste a time, mi not even a follow dat up,” Gyptian said. “Mi and Bounty good, Bounty a di general and nothing cyah guh wrong. Mi surprise, mi nuh know what kinda controversy dat and how it come about,” he continued.

“Dem a sey Bounty woman live wid mi, nuh body nuh live wid mi, all dat a rubbish. It is like when yu hear a man sey man can fly and yu know sey dat impossible. A mussi because wi a artiste dem want something fi sey, mi nuh deh wid none a Bounty woman, dem wicked eeh,” Gyptian added.

Bounty Killer’s camp also denied the claims. “Bounty and Gyptian no have notten, a just some people a spread false rumors,” a source inside Killer’s camp told Urban Islandz.

The highly anticipated Bob Marley documentary premiered last week at the Berlin film festival to loud cheers.

The film by Oscar-winning Scottish filmmaker Kevin McDonald tracks Marley’s journey from a bullied biracial Jamaican boy to a worldwide reggae superstar.

Shortly after the premiere, McDonald told reporters that he is honored to be apart of the cultural power and influence of Bob Marley worldwide

“For me, Bob is really one of the greatest cultural figures of 20th century. I don’t think anyone in popular music has had the same lasting impact that he has,” Macdonald said.

“Anywhere you go in the world, you find his image, his music, his wisdom — literally anywhere you go. So it’s nice to be a small part of that and hopefully to bring to people around the world a sense of who this man was as a human being, not just as the legend, not just as the great icon,” he added.

The two-and-half-hour-long film takes on a compelling chronological approach of Marley’s 1940s childhood living in poverty in the hills of Jamaica after his black mother is abandoned by his white father, Captain Norval Marley.

Making special appearance in the documentary are his widow Rita Marley, who spoke candidly of their time together, and Bunny Wailer, a longtime friend and band member of Bob Marley and the Wailers.

Rohan Marley, who was in Berlin for the premiere, said his father was a father not only to his own kids but to many.

“My father told us this: ‘You’re inside the gates, you’re OK. I’m here for the ones outside the gates’,” he said. “Growing up we knew that all children belong to him. We may call him Daddy but we’re just one of the many, you know.”

“Marley” documentary will debut across U.S. theatres on April 20.

The drug trial of embattled dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel was put off yesterday until March 14 when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.

Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, went on trial to answer to the possession of ganja charge brought against him.

He was offered $40,000 bail but could not take it up because of other charges he is facing for which he has not been able to secure bail.

According to police reports, Palmer and some of his associates were accosted in a hotel room in New Kingston last September.

The police say a quantity of ganja was found in the room.

At the same time, Palmer is before the courts on other charges including two counts of murder and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

The Lakers returned from their road trip to beat the Atlanta Hawks Tuesday, but that wasn't what had social media buzzing in L.A. late on Valentine's Day. Vanessa Bryant, Kobe's ex-wife, attended her first game of the season at Staples Center, according to the Orange County Register's Kevin Ding.

Just 61 days ago, Vanessa split up with the Lakers star, filing for divorce on December 16 in Orange County's Superior Court of California, citing "irreconcilable differences." She won $75 million and three mansions in a divorce settlement with the NBA star, according to the New York Post (via TMZ).

Right alongside Jeremy Lin, Kate Upton and Best Valentine's Day,Vanessa Bryant was a trending topic on the microblogging site Twitter in Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

The fact that Vanessa Bryant, 29, witnessed her first game of the season on Valentine's Day, apparently without the former couple's children, is intriguing for romantics thinking reconciliation could be in the works. Fueling hopes and speculation is the fact that she waited outside the Lakers' locker room after the game to see Kobe.

Vybz Kartelwas offered bail in the sum of $40,000.00JA dollars with one or two sureties in the matter involving ganja possession.

The dancehall deejay, who will remain in custody, is also expected to surrender his travel documents. Vybz Kartel was arrested and charged for ganja possession last year after police raided a hotel in New Kingston. He’s to return to court on March 14.

Meanwhile the other charges of murder, conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm are still pending.

Rap mogul 50 Cent traveled to Africa with ABC News reporter Dan Harris last week as part of his Street King initiative to provide a million meals to impoverished nations.

“At times today, this [very] confident rapper was left speechless,” tweeted Harris.

50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, said last year that he would embarked on the mission to provide a million meals to the needy.

50 Cent visited a refugee camp in Somalia, where he served food to the children, before he journeyed to Kenya, where he socialize with young fans.

“I’m in Somalia this week to show the world the devastation that is taking place,” he wrote on Facebook while posting photos. “Children going hungry everyday, even dying everyday from hunger. I am going to keep sending thru images from out here. I need you to take these photos and re-post to your friends. The world needs to see what is going on.”

Incacerated reggae star Buju Banton’s was dealt a major blow yesterday when the United States government dismissed his appeal.

According to reports by the Associated Press, the US Government said there was sufficient evidence to support his conviction in June of last year of three counts of drug trafficking and conspiracy charges.

The AP reported that Federal prosecutors filed their response last Friday in Atlanta’s federal appeals court, where Buju’s lawyers had filed an appeal in December.

In their legal document, prosecutors noted that “Banton’s words and actions, in recorded conversations and a videotaped meeting in a Sarasota, Florida, warehouse where Banton tasted some cocaine, revealed the singer ‘eagerly brokered’ a drug deal between a friend and undercover government agents.

Buju Banton lawyers led by David Oscar Markus file an appeal in a Georgia appeal court last year claiming that the US government acted illegally by failing to bring Buju to trial before 70 days. This, they said, is a violation of the US constitution’s Sixth Amendment.

But the Federal government dismissed the appeal, saying prosecutors brought a legitimate case against the reggae star.

Banton’s, whose real name is Mark Myrie, was sentenced last year to 10 years in prison in a federal court in Tampa, Florida.

The Grammy winning singer is serving his term at the Federal Correctional Institute in Miami. He maybe eligible for parole in six years.

Fresh off her sizzling Grammy performance with Coldplay, Rihanna lent her voice to a worthy cause when she performed at L.A.’s House of Blues Sunday Night.

Also on the bill were Deadmau5, Calvin Harris, and Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia.

The blonde bombshell rocked the house for just under 10 minutes, opening with “Where Have You Been” and joined Harris for “We Found Love.” Concertgoers reportedly shelled out between $250 and $1,000 at the fundraiser that benefited Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Rihanna took home one Grammy on Sunday night for Best Rap/Song Collaboration for “All of the Lights,” with Kanye West and Kid Cudi.

Reggae star Stephen Marley took home his third Grammy as a solo artiste at last night’s ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Marley won the golden trophy over Shaggy, Isreal Vibration, Monty Alexander and bigger brother Ziggy Marley.

Urban Islandz reps caught up with the singer/producer shortly after the Grammys last night, where he express gratitude for winning the Best Reggae album Grammy.

“It’s a blessing to win the Grammy, I never thought I would win but when you put out good material you can expect good thing,” an elated Marley said. “I am happy to represent reggae music on this level and to the fullest extent.”

Stephen Marley won the Grammy for his 2011 critically acclaimed album Revelation Pt 1: The Root Of Life. The album features guest appearances from brothers Ziggy and Damian Marley, Capleton, Buju Banton, Wale and Melanie Fiona.

Part two of the album will be released later this year.
